void
hand-made artist’s book. gouache, casein,
ink, pencil, colored pencil, collage, cyanotype, woodcut, photocopy,
and inkjet prints on paper. grass paper-bound. 10 x 8 ”, 2003-2005.
This book developed from the reassembling of proof
prints & remnants from The Circular Ruins project. So it began
with images of floating men & amorphous alchemy-inspired cyanotypes.
The man symbolizes a void that can be variously filled; questions:
am I a man or a dream? Man or image of man? How do I exist? Full
or empty? Creator or Created? Consuming or Consumed? Immortal or
mortal? These were my thoughts.
Then Shock & Awe began to unfold on the TV screen. The men in
these images became soldiers, civilians, anchormen, war-mongers,
peace-lovers… or the empty space of life lost. The pages became
a space for my somewhat nonsensical rant.
