composition
hand-made artist’s book. one of a kind.
rubber stamp, ink, graphite, and watercolor on drawing paper. cloth-bound.
7 3⁄4 x 6 1⁄2” 2000-2004
In this sketch-like book, I was playing with the word composition
– as in formal composition {composition of an image} and writing
composition {composition of thoughts into language/a composition
book} - and the ability of language to communicate.
Thoughts included: the baffling amount of miscommunication despite
an inundation of rhetoric & words- both written & spoken.
The static, linear, repetitive pattern of lined paper. A book of
lines. What’s between them? Silence speaks. Play with different
ways to make lines. Fill the pages with lines, then with characters
or methods of “writing”. Deviate from the path - stray
- meander from between the lines.
