artist statement
My fascination with art-making lies in the process of exploration and
discovery.
Simply stated, my work is a visual journal.
I document observations, lines of thought, and invented images and narratives
- sometimes straightforward, sometimes metaphoric- usually by putting
image on surface.
The inspirations are nothing less than encyclopedic: myth, archetype,
contemporary culture, social & political concerns, science & medicine,
religion & philosophy, literature, and personal & collective history.
I am drawn toward latent structures, indiscernible figures, forms that
wax and wane in perception, and thoughts or images that coalesce and dissipate.
Through constant introduction of new elements, I aim to create an ongoing,
evolving system of work that evokes wonder and the sense that there is
something hidden waiting to be found- both in my work and in the world
around us.
Underlying my work is a belief that the personal is often quite universal
and hence a vital means of communicating and connecting with others.
